Alone Season 8 Gear: Every Recorded 10-Item List

2026-06-24

Spoiler note: this covers who won season 8 and how the recorded contestants placed.

Season 8, "Grizzly Mountain," was the show's first true alpine, high-elevation location, set at Chilko Lake in British Columbia and running from June to August 2021. Only 4 of the 10 contestants have any gear recorded, and the reason for that gap is worth stating plainly rather than papering over: research for this season found that AI-assisted searches had produced plausible-looking full ten-item lists for several contestants, but when checked against the actual cited sources, only a single item in each case was really documented, the rest had been auto-completed. Those fabricated lists were thrown out rather than published, which is why six contestants here show empty or near-empty records instead of a full ten.

Clay Hayes' winning list

Clay Hayes, a professional bowyer and traditional archery instructor, won by lasting 74 days, the longest of the season, hunting with a self-made bow and surviving a close encounter with a grizzly bear along the way.

Item What he picked
Axe Granfors Bruks Scandinavian Forest Axe
Bow and arrows Osage orange self bow
Ferro rod Bayite 1/2" x 5"
Fishing kit Fluorocarbon line, 25 hooks
Multitool Leatherman Free P4
Pot GSI anodized aluminum Dutch oven, 2 quart
Paracord 5col 550 MILSPEC, 80 meters
Saw Silky Katanaboy 650
Sleeping bag Feathered Friends down, -40°F rated
Snare wire Standard

The full account of how a bowyer's kit shaped his run, including the deer he took with a self-made bow, is in everything Clay Hayes carried to win.

The two other complete lists

Runner-up Biko Wright (73 days, medically evacuated for a heart condition brought on by malnutrition) and ninth-place Jordon Bell (19 days, homesickness) both have full ten-item records, and both echo Hayes almost item for item: a Dutch oven pot, a Silky Katanaboy saw, a bow, a multitool, and snare wire all appear on all three lists. The difference between finishing first and ninth on this season had far less to do with what was packed than with what happened once the season wore on.

The one-item record, and the six blanks

Fifth-place Rose Anna Moore, evacuated on day 37 for frostbite and malnutrition, has exactly one confirmed item: a long bow. That single line is what survived the fabrication check described above; a fuller-looking list existed in early research but could not be traced back to anything she or a reliable source had actually said, so it was cut down to the one item that held up.

Theresa Emmerich Kamper, Colter Barnes, Nate Weber, Matt Corradino, Michelle Finn, and Tim Madsen all have entirely empty gear records for the same reason. All six ran genuinely interesting seasons, Emmerich Kamper held on for 69 days before a medical evacuation, Barnes lasted 67, but nothing about their specific gear choices has turned up in a source that could be verified rather than guessed at.

What the recorded picks share

Among the 4 contestants with any data, a bow appears on all 4 lists, and an axe, saw, multitool, sleeping bag, pot, ferro rod, fishing kit, snare wire, and paracord each appear on 3 of 4. That is a small sample, not a season-wide claim, but it lines up with how bow choices have played out across the show more broadly. Every other champion's list, including seasons with full documentation, sits together on the winners page.
