Survival Show Guide

Alone, honestly answered

The questions everyone types into a search bar at 11pm, answered straight. Where a number isn't public, I say so instead of inventing one.

Is Alone real or staged?

Alone is about as unstaged as survival television gets. Contestants are dropped at separate sites, film themselves with a supplied camera kit, and have no camera crew living with them. There are no food drops, no challenges invented by producers, and no eliminations except people quitting or failing a medical check. The isolation is real, which is why so many exits are psychological rather than physical. Production does conduct periodic medical checks, and crews come in for those and for tap-outs, but nobody hands anyone a fish.

How much is the Alone prize money?

The standard grand prize on the US show is $500,000 to the last person remaining. Season 7 was the exception: a $1,000,000 prize that required lasting 100 days. Alone Australia's prize is $250,000 AUD, and Alone: Frozen used a split-prize format. Season 4 of the US show was a team season, so the winning pair split the $500,000.

Do Alone contestants get paid even if they lose?

The show has never published a full pay structure, and contestants are bound by NDAs, so treat any specific per-week figure you read as rumor. Several past contestants have said publicly that there is a modest weekly stipend while participants are on the land, but the show's economics are winner-take-the-prize. Nobody is getting rich by tapping out early.

How do tap-outs work?

Every contestant carries a satellite phone. When someone decides they are done, they call production and a boat or helicopter comes to extract them, which can take hours depending on weather and terrain. The phrase 'tapping out' covers voluntary exits; contestants can also be removed involuntarily when a scheduled medical check finds a problem, most commonly dangerous weight loss.

What are the medical checks?

Medical teams visit contestants at intervals that tighten as the season goes on and people get thinner. They weigh contestants, check vitals, and can pull anyone whose condition crosses the show's safety thresholds. Medical pulls have decided real outcomes, including a runner-up finish where the contestant never chose to leave.

How many items can Alone contestants bring?

Ten items, chosen from an approved list, plus standard-issue clothing and safety equipment that does not count toward the ten. The strategy of the ten-item pick is a huge part of the show.

How long do Alone seasons last?

There is no fixed end date on the standard format: the season ends when one person is left. Winning runs have ranged from under 60 days to 100 days. Season 7 fixed the bar at 100 days, and Alone: Frozen used a 50-day target format.

Where can I watch Alone?

The US show airs on History and streams on the History app, with older seasons rotating through major streamers depending on region. Alone Australia airs on SBS.
