What Cade's pack had to handle

A bar of soap made Cade Cole's final ten. Only three of the 101 contestants with a recorded gear list in our data spent a slot on soap, and on a list this unconventional it is somehow not the boldest call. That honor goes to what is absent: no axe, no saw, no paracord. A knife and a multitool are the entire cutting department for a Saskatchewan fall.

There is a coherent theory underneath it. Cole is a conservationist and expert hunter and tracker, and the list is built for acquiring animals, not architecture: bow, snare wire, fishing kit, plus a shovel, which roughly one in ten recorded lists carry and which earns its keep digging fire pits, cold storage, and shelter foundations. The soap fits the same logic, hygiene as infection prevention when a cut hand can end a hunting focused run.

But the wood math is unforgiving at Reindeer Lake. Every shelter pole and every night of firewood had to come from a knife, a multitool, and whatever deadfall could be broken by hand. Betting that hunting returns would outpace the daily tax of processing wood without dedicated tools is about as aggressive as list building gets.

What ended Cade's run (reveals the result)

Conservationist and expert hunter/tracker from Crowheart, Wyoming.

Why the run ended: Medically evacuated after loss of consciousness

Our take

Cole was medically evacuated on day 23 after a loss of consciousness, finishing sixth. The exit came from his body, not his kit, so the great no axe experiment never got a full trial; 23 days is long enough to prove the concept could function and far too short to prove it could last a Saskatchewan winter.

We keep coming back to this list because it is the rare one that treats Alone as a hunting problem with a camping problem attached, rather than the reverse. It did not get the ending that would tell us whether that is genius, but we would not recommend the bet to anyone who is not, like Cole, an actual professional tracker.
