The trade off is clean. A dedicated pan buys you a wide, shallow surface that fries fish properly and doubles as a plate, at the cost of an entire slot in a ten item system that punishes single purpose gear harder than any other constraint on the show. A pot with a pan style lid buys eighty percent of that function for free. Two winners sit on opposite sides of that trade, so neither answer is wrong, but only one of them is free.

We would buy the pot lid combination and bank the slot, which is the choice we would defend for almost anyone. The contestant who should take the Jonas route is the one whose whole calorie plan runs through daily fish, where a real steel pan's even heat and easy cleanup pays rent every single day.
