Wrong tool, wrong biome is the short version. Two contestants across every mainline US season with a recorded list have packed a machete, Jessie Krebs in season 9 and David Young in season 13, neither exit had anything to do with the blade, and neither entry names a maker. For a tool this dominant in general survival content, two picks is a verdict in itself.

A machete earns its reputation clearing soft, green, vine choked growth in a single motion, and the show almost never goes where that grows. Boreal forest, tundra, and subarctic coastline reward the axe and hatchet's concentrated bite on dense wood plus a fixed blade's control, and that pairing already owns the cutting slots on nearly every documented loadout. The Skills Challenge spinoff is the exception that maps the tool honestly: a judge issued machetes for a fast structure build, which is clearing and shaping work, not a season survival choice.

We would leave this category empty for any Alone style location the show has actually used. The buyer who should ignore us is the one genuinely headed for brushy, viney, fast growing country, where the machete's reach and speed are real; there, a full length blade with a full tang and a handle that stays put in wet hands is the working spec. Everyone else is buying a jungle answer to a taiga question.
