How the season was won (reveals the winner)

Woniya Thibeault, an ancestral-skills teacher from Grass Valley, California who runs the school Buckskin Revolution, had been the Season 6 runner-up in 2019, lasting 73 days on the shores of Great Slave Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories before tapping out from starvation. Invited back for Alone: Frozen on Labrador's North Atlantic coast, she focused on reinforcing her shelter (including building a wooden door), maintaining her trapline for rabbits, and attempting ice fishing, while staying deliberately cautious near the end of the run to avoid an injury-related tap-out. She reached the competition's 50-day cap, the only contestant of the six to do so, which under Frozen's split-prize rules meant she claimed the full $500,000 and became the first woman to win any season of Alone.

Frozen was built for its prize to be split. The spinoff dropped six returning contestants onto the Labrador coast with winter already arriving, set a hard 50 day finish line instead of an open ended outlast, and structured the payout to be shared among however many people reached the cap. Then exactly one person reached it. Woniya Thibeault's solo finish meant a format designed around multiple winners handed everything to her instead, a structural quirk the producers surely did not plan and the most satisfying accident in the franchise.

What makes her run compelling is how much it was a correction of her first one. On season 6 she lasted 73 days on Great Slave Lake and tapped out from starvation as the runner up. On Frozen she played the specific game in front of her: reinforced shelter with an actual wooden door, a steady rabbit trapline, attempts at ice fishing, and, crucially, deliberate caution in the final stretch because a single injury would have voided everything with the finish line in sight. Chasing a fixed date rewards risk management over heroics, and she seemed to be the only one of the six who fully internalized that.

The margins say the rest. Michelle Finn was the next best at 38 days, a 12 day gap that is enormous by franchise standards, and it reflects how hard the front loaded winter hit a cast of proven veterans. Thibeault became the first woman to win any version of Alone, roughly eight months before Gina Chick's Australian win, and she did it on a reconstructed gear record; even her documented loadout is flagged as pieced together from the broadcast rather than officially published. The win itself needs no asterisk. One person met the format's bar, and the format paid her all of it.

  1. E1 · 50 Day Freeze

    August 11, 2022 · Days 1-5

Six former Alone contestants are dropped on the coast of Labrador, Canada, in early winter with a shared goal: anyone who lasts 50 days splits a $500,000 prize. Callie Russell and Amos Rodriguez begin building shelters and foraging for seal fat and hare, while Mark D'Ambrosio quickly realizes he'd rather be home with his young son than push through the isolation. Mark becomes the season's first tap-out, choosing family over the competition just days in.

Out this episode: Mark D'Ambrosio (day 5)

    • Callie Russell finds seal fat and spots a humpback whale off the Labrador coast
    • Amos Rodriguez catches a snowshoe hare in his snares
    • Mark D'Ambrosio taps out early, framing it as 'starting a new chapter' rather than quitting

    August 18, 2022 · Days 1-6

The remaining three contestants, Woniya Thibeault, Greg Ovens, and Michelle Finn, are introduced as they establish camps in worsening winter weather. Woniya battles a damaged, leaking tarp and early tendonitis, Greg loses his cooking pot to the tide and struggles to catch fish, and Michelle finds abundant clams and mussels but develops a stomach illness. No one taps out this episode, but all three show early signs of physical strain.

Facts worth knowing

Open the facts (they discuss results by name)
  • Alone: Frozen is a spin-off of the main Alone series that used six returning contestants from prior seasons instead of a new cast: Greg Ovens (Season 3), Woniya Thibeault (Season 6), Callie Russell, Mark D'Ambrosio and Amos Rodriguez (all Season 7), and Michelle Finn (Season 8).
  • The season was filmed on the coast of Labrador, Canada, with contestants dropped off closer to the onset of extreme winter weather than in a typical Alone season.
  • The format set a fixed target of 50 days rather than declaring a winner by elimination; the $500,000 prize was to be split among however many contestants reached Day 50.
  • Woniya Thibeault was the sole contestant to reach Day 50, winning the full prize and becoming the first woman to win any season of the Alone franchise.
  • Five of the six contestants tapped out before Day 50: Mark D'Ambrosio (day 5, homesickness), Greg Ovens (day 6, anxiety/inability to fish), Amos Rodriguez (day 19, lack of game), Callie Russell (day 26, empty traps), and Michelle Finn (day 38, smoke-related eye injury).
  • The season aired 8 episodes on History Channel from August 11 to September 22, 2022, with double-episode nights airing episodes 5-6 and 7-8 on the same dates.
  • Alone: Frozen was announced in 2022 alongside a second concurrent spin-off, Alone: The Skills Challenge, as part of History Channel's expansion of the Alone franchise.
  • Woniya Thibeault's Frozen win added to her prior Season 6 run, giving her a reported 123 cumulative days across her Alone appearances.

Viewer's notes

Open the notes (they discuss runs by name)
  • Watch the finale, 'The Bitter End,' for Woniya Thibeault's historic win as the first woman to win an Alone season and her emotional extraction.
  • Episode 7, 'The Last Hope,' is worth watching for Callie Russell's tense empty-fish-trap tap-out sequence right up to the two-person finale.
  • This spin-off leans on trapping, foraging, and shellfish gathering (mussels, hares, fox, sea urchins) more than the main show's big-game hunting drama, useful for viewers who enjoy small-game survival technique.
  • Because the cast is all returning contestants, first-time viewers may get more out of it after watching the contestants' original seasons (3, 6, 7, and 8) for backstory.
  • The shared 50-day prize format changes the strategic calculus compared to standard Alone seasons, contestants are rewarded for collectively reaching the finish line rather than simply outlasting each other.
